Ty ba is a plucked string instrument related to the Chinese Pipa and the Japanese Biwa.
On the neck of the Ty ba, there are 4 curved ivory pieces called the Four Heaven Kings.
The instrument has high frets that, in a manner similar to the Dan Tranh, allows for alteration of pitch and vibrato.

The Ty Ba is traditionally played with a tortoise shell or plectrum. 
It is mainly an instrument used in Royal orchestras such as Nha Nhac (Elegant music) and Thi Nhac (Poem music), Thien Nhac (Buddhist orchestra) as well as in Tai Tu and Bat Am orchestras.

Ty Ba spelas traditionellt med ett skölpaddsskal eller plektrum. Instrumentet används framförallt i hovorkestrar som Nha Nhac (elegant musik) och Thi Nhac (Poetisk musik), Thien Nhac Buddhistisk orkester, samt i Tai Tu och Bat Am orkestrar.
